Without it, you may find yourself facing constant rejection, strained relationships, and an inability to build a strong team. You can’t be successful in network marketing without mastering communication skills.

So, let’s take a deep dive into how to communicate effectively and set yourself up for a thriving network marketing business.

1. Be Genuinely Interested

Don’t just ask questions to break the ice so you can shove a product down someone’s throat. People have excellent instincts to discern when someone is not sincere in their friendliness efforts.

Show genuine interest in others. Ask them about their hobbies or pets. Chat about their favorite musician or TV show. Remember things about them from your previous conversations.

If you are sincere in your friendship with them, they will not feel like you are being sales-y when you talk about your products.

2. Listen

Listen up!

Yes, listen to us. We’re giving you valuable advice right here: listen to everyone you communicate with.

God gives us two ears and one mouth for a reason. When you think of communication, you might think of all the ways you can convey information to people. But to truly be an effective communicator, you need to be able to hear what information they need.

Take time in your conversation to let the other person talk. Take what they are saying into account. Listen to their wants, needs, struggles, and accomplishments.

Listening builds trust between you and the person you’re communicating with.

You know you are communicating effectively when you can remember and build a relationship with them based on the information they share with you. If you are concerned about how to recruit people in network marketing, start by working on your listening skills.

You can try a few techniques to improve your listening skills:

  • Practice active listening by focusing fully on the speaker without interrupting
  • Summarize key points to ensure understanding
  • Ask clarifying questions to demonstrate engagement and comprehension

Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing and reducing distractions can also help you maintain focus during conversations.

You may be surprised how powerful this one skill of listening can be.

3. Utilize Nonverbal Communication

What you’re doing says as much as the words you speak. If you let someone talk but have a vacant look on your face, they won’t believe you care about them or what they are telling you. Be conscious of your facial expressions, eye contact, and body language.

Don’t be afraid to sit in front of a mirror and analyze your facial expressions. Does your face look genuine and sincere? Do you look cold or unapproachable? Do you seem like you’re eager to listen to someone confide in you?

4. Aim for Simplicity

Practice giving your pitches in a succinct, concise way that won’t feel too long or drawn out in a regular conversation.

If you have to go into a 15-minute explanation of what products you offer or why the company started, you might lose the interest of some people. You may have hooked them if you allowed them to have a more open dialogue about the company.

If you are clear and concise, your message won’t get lost in the drawn-out explanations. Being straightforward is more likely to captivate your audience.

5. Ask Questions

One key to being an effective communicator is to ask questions. But do your best to avoid questions that have “yes” or “no” as the answer. Instead, ask questions that will encourage the other person to open up to you.

If you’re working on how to grow your Avon business, instead of, “Have you heard of Avon?” try asking, “Where’s your favorite place to buy makeup and skincare products?”

6. When Possible, Talk

Meanings and intentions can get lost in translation via the written word. Emails and texts don’t always come across the way the writer intended.

The best way to communicate is face-to-face whenever possible. This allows you to gauge the other person’s body language, know you have their undivided attention, and catch other subtleties through the conversation that might have been lost to cyberspace if it had been an email.

If in-person isn’t possible, phone or Zoom calls are effective. You can hear the other person’s voice and discern things from their inflection that may have been harder to decipher from a text.

For your social media followers, getting in front of the camera, even though it may be uncomfortable, is a great way to build trust and connection with them.

Although the communication is skewed that way since it feels like a one-way conversation, you are just simply starting the conversation. The comments continue the conversation, and you can pick up a back-and-forth exchange from there.

7. Practice

If you aren’t comfortable talking with other people, practice! Grab a friend, neighbor, family member, or co-worker and talk. You can let them know you are practicing your communication skills and ask for feedback, or if you’re uncomfortable with that, you can just work on implementing your new communication skills with people you’re more familiar with and comfortable with.

Don’t Forget to Consider Your Audience

Remember, you communicate with individuals daily while working on your network marketing business.

Every interaction has the potential to impact individuals on a personal level, but you need to tailor your approach. From your team members to prospective clients and loyal followers, each connection is an opportunity to foster trust and build rapport.

By considering your audience and acknowledging the diverse people you engage with daily, you can cultivate stronger relationships and drive meaningful results.

Use these tips to help you become a better leader, refine your selling techniques, elevate your social media presence, and strengthen the bonds of friendship.
