Doing vs Being: The Identity Gap That’s Keeping Network Marketers Stuck

Here is the thing Brandy wishes someone had handed her in a YouTube video on day one of building her online business.

It would have saved two full years of spinning wheels.

She had the strategy. The scripts. The posts. She was showing up consistently and doing everything she had been taught to do. And nothing was working. Nothing was clicking. And for the longest time she genuinely believed she was missing a tactic. Some tool she had not discovered. Some framework she had not found yet. Some platform she had not tried.

Come to find out it had nothing to do with any of that. Not even a little bit.

Today we are getting into the identity shift that has to happen before the income shift can happen. And this applies whether you are a network marketer, an affiliate marketer, somewhere in between, or still trying to figure out which path is even right for you.

Because here is what most people do not realize. Identity is upstream of everything. And until that foundation shifts, more strategy is just pouring water into a bucket with holes.

Why Identity Has Anything to Do With Income

When most people think about building an online business they think about tools and funnels and which platform to post on. And those things do matter. But they are downstream of something much bigger and much deeper.

Your identity, specifically how you see yourself and who you believe you are, determines what actions you take. It determines how you show up in conversations. It determines whether you follow up with a lead or let it go cold. Whether you post with confidence or post with apology energy. Whether you show up as a leader before anyone is following you or wait until the results tell you who you are.

James Clear talks about this in Atomic Habits. He says the most effective way to change your behavior is to focus on who you want to become, not just what you want to do. And it makes sense when you sit with it. If you identify as a top earner you are going to make the decisions and take the actions that a top earner makes. You are going to build your business the way a top earner builds theirs. And those actions eventually produce the result.

But here is the part that makes this genuinely uncomfortable. Your brain is wired to keep you consistent with your identity. So if you believe deep down that you are not good at sales, your brain will find a way to sabotage every sales conversation you have. Not because you are broken. Because your brain is doing exactly its job. It is keeping you consistent with the story you have told it about who you are.

This is why you can have all the right tactics and still go nowhere. The tactics are the water. The identity is the bucket. And if the bucket has holes, it does not matter how much water you pour in.

The Doing Versus Being Gap

There is a gap that most people live in for way too long without even realizing it. Brandy lived there for years. Cari did too. And if you are honest with yourself, you might recognize yourself in it right now.

Doing mode looks like this. You post because you are supposed to post. You DM people because your upline said to. You show up to the training because you said you would. You are going through all the motions. Checking all the boxes. And underneath all of it there is a quiet voice that says I do not really know if this is going to work for me.

And here is the dangerous part. That voice leaks out. It leaks into the copy you write. It leaks into the conversations you have. It leaks into the energy behind the videos you put on social media. People can feel it even if they cannot name it. There is a quality to content created from a place of doubt that is different from content created from a place of conviction. Your audience senses the difference even when they cannot articulate why they scroll past one person and stop for another.

Being is completely different. Being is when you have actually decided in your nervous system, not just your head, that you are this person. You are not trying to become a successful marketer. You already are one. You are just showing the world what you already know to be true about yourself.

And the shift from doing to being does not happen by grinding harder. That is what most people miss. We have been conditioned to believe that hustle equals results. That if things are not working you just need to do more. But working more from the wrong identity just exhausts you faster. What changes everything is working from a different identity. The same actions taken by a different version of you produce completely different results because the energy, the confidence, and the conviction behind them are completely different.

The Network Marketing Identity Wall

In network marketing specifically, a lot of people come in with an identity that was handed to them rather than one they built intentionally. They were told to be enthusiastic. To lead with the product. To talk to everyone in their warm market. To share their why. To stay consistent.

And that excited distributor identity can actually work for a while. But there comes a point, usually right around when the warm market is exhausted, when that identity stops serving you. When you realize that the people who taught you were working within a very specific set of conditions that no longer apply. And to grow past that wall you have to become something different. Not a distributor. An actual marketer. Someone who creates content, builds an audience, attracts strangers, and converts them through trust rather than proximity.

That requires a full identity rebuild. Not just a new strategy. And most people skip the rebuild and just try to layer new tactics on top of the old identity. And that is why so many people can be doing all the right things on paper and still feel like nothing is moving. The foundation did not change. Only the tools did.

The Affiliate Marketing Identity Shift

On the affiliate marketing side the identity challenge looks a little different but it is just as real.

A lot of people come into affiliate marketing thinking they just need to find the right link to share. They believe it is passive by default. That you post a link, people click it, and money comes in without you having to build anything real. And then they realize pretty quickly that affiliate marketing, especially high ticket affiliate marketing, requires just as much personal brand presence as network marketing. Just as much relationship building. Maybe more.

Because when someone is considering spending real money on something you are recommending, trust is not optional. It is the whole game. And in affiliate marketing you do not even have a personal product transformation story to lean on. You have to build authority through your perspective, your consistency, and your genuine belief in what you are promoting. You have to become someone whose recommendation actually means something.

That is an identity question before it is a marketing question. Who am I in this space? Why should anyone listen to me? And the answer is not your credentials. It is your conviction. It is who you believe you are so deeply that other people start to believe it too.

Conviction Before Credentials

This is the piece that most people have completely backwards.

They are waiting to feel confident until they have results. Waiting to show up as an authority until they have proof. Waiting to believe in themselves until the income validates it. But that is not how it works. That has never been how it works.

Conviction comes before credentials. Always.

Here is a real example. Brandy started building in affiliate marketing in 2016. The strategy she was using then and the strategy she was using in 2020 when she made a million dollars in affiliate commissions was not dramatically different. She was not using some brand new secret that nobody else knew about. What changed was her identity. At the start of 2020 she made a decision. A real decision. Not a hope or a wish or a goal she wrote in a journal. A committed decision that she was going to be a million dollar affiliate by the end of that year.

And when she made that decision the way she showed up changed. The confidence in her content changed. The conviction in her conversations changed. The actions she took and the consistency with which she took them changed. Because she was no longer building toward the identity. She was building from it.

That is the difference. And it shows up in ways that the people watching you can feel long before they can see your income report.

How to Actually Make the Shift

This is not about saying affirmations you do not believe. It is not about faking it until you make it. That approach does not work because your nervous system knows the difference between something you actually believe and something you are performing.

This is about evidence based identity building. And here is how to start.

The first step is to look at your past through a different lens. Think about the times in your life when you identified as something specific and became it. Maybe you identified as an athlete who was going to make it to state in track. Maybe you identified as someone who was going to graduate at the top of their class. Maybe you identified as the kind of mom who figures things out no matter what. You have already done this before. You have already proven to yourself that when you see yourself as someone specific, you show up differently and produce different results. Your business is not different from that. It just requires you to apply the same mechanism intentionally.

The second step is to write three identity statements in present tense. Not who you are trying to become. Who you already are, even if the results have not caught up yet. They might sound like: I am someone who creates genuine connections with the people I am meant to serve. I am someone who shows up consistently because I know my voice matters. I am someone who earns well because I lead with value. Write them down. Then read them every single morning before you touch your phone or open your computer. Before you check who liked your post from last night. Before you let the external world tell you who you are for the day.

This matters more than most people realize. The first thing you consume in the morning sets the tone for your identity for the rest of the day. If the first thing you do is check your engagement numbers you are letting external validation define your identity. And external validation is the most unstable foundation you can build a business on. Some days you will feel like a genius. Other days you will feel invisible. And your actions will follow whichever emotion the numbers triggered. That is not a business strategy. That is a roller coaster.

The third step is to audit your inputs. What you consume shapes how you see yourself. If you are constantly watching people who seem further ahead and you feel behind, you are reinforcing a scarcity identity. You are telling your brain that you are someone who is always chasing something just out of reach. And your brain will make that true.

Instead, consume content that reminds you of who you are becoming. Spend time in communities of people who already operate from the identity of success so that a growth mindset and a builder mentality start to feel normal rather than aspirational. Your environment is shaping your identity whether you are intentional about it or not. You might as well choose the environment that shapes it in the direction you want to go.

Why This Is Especially Important for Entrepreneurs

Building an online business is lonely in a way that most people outside of it genuinely do not understand. Your friends with regular jobs do not get what you do. When you try to explain it they look at you like you are describing a very elaborate hobby. The people closest to you might be supportive in a general way but they cannot really celebrate the wins or understand the setbacks because they have no frame of reference for either.

That isolation is one of the most underrated threats to identity in this space. Because when you spend too much time alone with your doubts and your metrics and your comparison spiral, the quiet voice that says I do not know if this is going to work for me gets louder. And when that voice gets loud enough it starts shaping your content, your conversations, and your commitment.

This is why community is not a luxury for online business builders. It is infrastructure. You need people around you who understand the journey and who already operate from the identity you are building toward. Not to validate you at every turn. But to normalize the belief that what you are doing is possible and real and worth the discomfort of the learning curve.

When you are surrounded by people who are building real businesses and making real income and navigating the same challenges you are, that becomes your new normal. And what feels normal, you actually do. That is not soft advice. That is how identity works.

Strategy Without Identity

Let us close with the thing Brandy and Cari come back to over and over in everything they teach.

Strategy without identity is pouring water into a bucket with holes. You can keep adding more tactics, more tools, more platforms, more training. But until you patch the holes with a clear and committed sense of who you are and who you are becoming, nothing is going to hold.

The highest leverage thing you can do for your business right now is not find a better content strategy. It is not optimize your funnel. It is not post more consistently. It is to decide who you are. To build that identity with intention and evidence and conviction. And then to take your strategy from that foundation.

Because everything becomes easier when you build from a place of I know exactly who I am. Your content gets clearer because you are not second guessing every word. Your conversations get more natural because you are not performing. Your consistency improves because you are showing up as yourself rather than trying to become someone else. And your results start to compound because you are finally moving from being instead of just doing.

You have already proven you can do this. Look at your past and find the evidence. Write the statements. Read them before anything else. Build the environment that reinforces the identity you are choosing.

And then get to work as that person. Not the person you are hoping to become someday. The person you already are.
