Someone posted this anonymously in a Facebook group recently. And I had to talk about it because I know a lot of you are going to feel it.
She said: this is my first MLM and I never expected it to take this much time and energy. I recruited people quickly but now I have completely stopped posting because I do not want any more team members. At first it was exciting. The adrenaline rush, the recognition, the feeling of being valued. But now it feels like it is taking away my time and my joy. I have a full time job and I am a mom who spends a lot of time driving my kids to their activities. I do not want to spend the rest of my free time on my phone answering texts. I am at the point where I want to quit. The only thing holding me back is that I have fifty people underneath me and I feel like walking away means letting them down. The extra money is good but not worth the mental tax it is causing. How do you people find joy in this?
First thing I want to say to her and to anyone reading this who felt that in their chest.
I do not think your problem is that you are not committed enough. I do not think you need to work harder. And I definitely do not think the answer is to spend more time on your phone.
I think you may have built something that was never given the right boundaries. And that is a completely different problem with a completely different solution.
Because sometimes you do not actually want to quit the business. You want to quit the way you have been running it. And those are two very different things.
How the Thing That Was Supposed to Create Freedom Becomes Another Boss
Here is exactly how it happens. You get your first customer. Then another. Then somebody joins the team. Then another. And suddenly you are getting notifications at all hours. People are excited about you. Your upline is recognizing you. Your team is asking questions. Your customers need things.
And for a while it is fun. It feels good to be needed. It feels good to be recognized. It feels good to watch that commission number go up. And maybe for the first time in a long time you think, I can actually do this.
But then something shifts. Your business starts creeping into every crack of your life. You are answering messages in the grocery store. You are responding while you are sitting at your kids activities. You are checking your phone before bed and waking up to seventeen messages. And now the thing that was supposed to create freedom is creating another boss.
I have been there. About six months into building my network marketing team I had about a thousand people and I was the bottleneck for every single one of them. I was the one solving every problem, answering every customer question, and recreating the same response over and over and over again. I was the tool.
And here is what nobody tells you. The more you train people to expect instant access to you, the more dependent they actually become on you. That is the opposite of duplication. That is dependence. And if your business stops the moment you stop, you have not built a business. You have built yourself another very stressful job with no HR department.
So let us fix it.
Action Step 1: Create Business Hours and Communicate Them
You do not have to answer at seven in the morning. You do not have to respond at eleven thirty at night. You do not have to interrupt dinner every time your phone dings. And you do not have to pull it out every time you are at your kids activities.
We have created a weird culture in online business where people believe that not answering immediately makes them a bad leader. That is one hundred percent not true. You are a human being with a family, a career, and a life. And if you keep operating like you are available around the clock, you are going to burn out and quit. I know because I did it.
Create business hours. Maybe you check messages from noon to twelve thirty and seven to seven thirty. That is it. And then communicate it clearly. Tell your team something like this.
Hey, I love helping you all but I also have a family and a life outside of my business. I am going to be checking messages during these windows so I can give you my full attention instead of being glued to my phone all day.
That is not rude. That is not bad leadership. That is a boundary. And it teaches your team what leadership actually looks like. Because if this is what your business looks like for you, they probably do not want it to look like that for them either.
Action Step 2: Do Not Become the Tool — Create the Tools
This is the one that changed everything for me. A mentor told me in the middle of my burnout that I had become the tool. I was the savior running around putting out fires instead of creating systems that prevented the fires in the first place.
Here is the rule. If you are answering the same question more than once, you have a content problem. Not a people problem.
If fifteen people ask how do I get started, make a video. If twenty people ask what should I post, make a training. If everyone asks where do I find this resource, make a document. Create once and leverage repeatedly. That is the power of content and systems and it is how you start getting your time back.
The specific thing I recommend is a start here system. One place your team can go when they have a question. A simple Google doc or resource hub that includes how to get started, your first ten posts, how to talk about the product, how to find customers, how to invite and follow up, how to use social media, FAQs, who to contact and for what.
When somebody asks what do I do, you stop typing out a seventeen minute response. You say go to start here, watch the first two modules, and then message me with your questions. That is coaching. That is mentorship. That is you giving people what they need and expecting them to go through the process. We are not parrots recreating the same answer every day.
Action Step 3: Categorize Your Fifty People
The woman who wrote that post mentioned feeling guilty about the fifty people underneath her. So let me address that directly.
Those fifty people are not your children. You did not promise to carry them forever. You gave them an opportunity. You taught them what you knew. And now your job is to build a system that allows them to become independent. That is leadership.
If every person underneath you requires you to personally motivate them, personally answer every question, and personally solve every problem, you have not built a team. You have built fifty people who have you on speed dial. That is exhausting. And it is not sustainable.
Take your fifty people and divide them into three categories.
Category one is the builders. The people who actually want to grow. These are the people you pour more energy into. They take initiative, ask good questions, and follow through. Identify your five potential builders and invest your real leadership time there. Not your fifty. Your five.
Category two is the customers and social sellers. They love the product. They occasionally share it. They are not trying to build anything massive. Do not treat them like they need daily leadership because they do not. Serve them well, appreciate them, and let them be exactly what they are.
Category three is the inactive. They may come back one day. They may not. Either is fine. Stop spending enormous energy trying to create urgency in people who are not currently choosing to participate. Your job is not to drag people across the finish line. Your job is to build an environment where people who want to run have a place to run.
The 3-5-1 Rule for Running Your Business Without It Running You
Here is a simple weekly framework that keeps your business moving without taking over your entire life.
Three pieces of content. This is your attraction content. Things that get people interested in you, your lifestyle, your expertise, your story, your perspective. Three pieces a week. That is it.
Five engagement actions. Comments, stories, conversations, lives, relationship building. Five intentional touchpoints with real people in your target audience.
One focused business action. Maybe it is following up with someone warm. Maybe it is inviting someone to take a look. Maybe it is training a builder or creating a new resource. One focused thing that actually moves your business forward.
That is the whole week. You do not need to post fourteen times a day. You do not need to spend six hours scrolling looking for people to recruit. You do not need to live on social media. You need to be consistent, intentional, and strategic. When you do that you will be shocked at how much your business moves with how little time it actually takes.
Build Your Brand Around You, Not Just the Company
The person who wrote that post said something that really stuck with me. She said I feel like it is taking over my identity.
And I understand that completely. When the only thing people know about you online is the company, every time you do not want to talk about the company you feel like you have nothing to say.
Your business is something you do. It is not who you are.
You are a mom. A wife. A friend. An employee. You are creative. You are funny. You are passionate. You have hobbies and dreams and experiences and an entire life that exists outside your network marketing company. Your business should fit into that life, not replace it.
This is why building your personal brand around more than just a product matters so much. When you build around you, you have an entire universe of content. People want to see your life. Your lessons. Your family. Your interests. Your expertise. Your story. Your goals. Your personality. The three-dimensional version of you that exists beyond the product posts and rank announcements.
Your business becomes one part of your brand instead of your entire identity. And that is the kind of brand that actually lasts because it is built on something no company can take away from you.
You Are Allowed to Redefine What Success Means to You
Here is the biggest mindset shift of everything in this episode.
You are allowed to change your definition of success.
Maybe when you started, success meant fifty people. Then a hundred. Then a rank. Then a certain income. Maybe now success means I make an extra fifteen hundred dollars a month and I do not hate my life. Maybe success means I have customers who love the product and a small group of builders I actually enjoy working with. Maybe success means I make money and I am fully present with my kids.
Your version of success does not have to match anyone else's. You do not need to be at the top of your company to deserve freedom. You do not need to build a giant organization unless you actually want to. You do not need five hundred people. You do not need to be online every waking hour.
You get to decide what this business is worth to you right now. And that number is allowed to change as your life changes.
Your Monday Morning Reset
If you are the person who wrote that post, or if you recognized yourself somewhere in this, here is what to do this week. Not tonight. This week.
Decide your actual income goal. Not what your upline says you should want. Your number. How much do you actually want this business to produce for your life right now.
Decide your time budget. Five hours a week. Ten. Three. Pick a real number and stick to it.
Decide what you will and will not do anymore. No answering after eight pm. No repeating the same training. No chasing inactive people. Set your lines and hold them.
Build your start here system. Put your resources in one place. When somebody enrolls, send it to them. A living document that grows as you grow.
Identify your five potential builders. Not your fifty. Your five. And pour your real leadership energy there.
Start posting content that is bigger than the company. Show people you. Your life, your lessons, your personality, your passion. Let the business be one part of the story.
And then put your phone down and go live your life. Because the most ironic thing about building a freedom business is spending your entire life staring at a screen.
You do not have to feel guilty. You do not have to decide today whether you are staying forever or walking away forever. You can pause, restructure, put boundaries around what you have built, stop recruiting, serve the customers you already have, and develop the leaders who are already there.
And then see how you feel.
Because I think you might find that you do not actually want to quit the business. You want to quit the way you have been running it. And that is a completely fixable thing.
