How to Stop Chasing the Wrong Prospects and Start Attracting the Right Ones in Network Marketing

Can I be real with you for a second?

When I first started in this industry back in 2013, I did exactly what I was told to do. Go talk to anybody and everybody. Every single person you have ever met is a potential prospect. More people, more messages, more reach.

And I worked. I genuinely worked hard.

And do you know what I got back from all of that effort?

Polite people.

Person after person saying oh this sounds interesting, let me think about it. And then silence. Never heard from again. Not a single person actually saying yes or joining anything or buying anything.

I would sit there for days refreshing my messages. Building it up in my head. Convinced this person was going to come back. And the truth was they had already moved on. They were never going to buy. And I was pouring real energy into a person who was never my buyer to begin with.

Here is what I had to learn the hard way.

A huge chunk of the exhaustion you carry in this business is not from working too little. It is from aiming all of that work at people who were never interested in the first place.

Today I want to talk about why that happens, why it is not your fault, and exactly how to stop doing it.

Why Good People Keep Chasing the Wrong Crowd

Here is the trap. Chasing the wrong people feels productive.

You are busy. You are messaging people. You are replying, following up, pouring your heart into conversation after conversation. It genuinely feels like you are doing the work. The calendar is full. The DMs are active. Everything looks like momentum.

But busy and effective are not the same thing. And I learned that the slow, painful way.

When you talk to everybody you connect with nobody. You are spreading your energy across hundreds of people who have no particular reason to be interested in what you have. And what you get back is a lot of surface activity that tricks you into thinking you are close when you are really just exhausting yourself on people who are window shopping your life.

It looks a little different depending on what you are building. In affiliate marketing it shows up as clicks and likes and comments from people who are never going to spend a dime. In network marketing it shows up as friends who say the nicest things and then go quiet the second money comes up. In your own offers it shows up as people who love your content, love your vibe, and have zero intention of ever buying.

Compliments instead of conversions. And that is the part that really messes with your head. Because all of that warmth and all of that surface engagement tricks you into thinking you are building something when you are really just building a really nice audience of people who are never going to say yes.

What “Let Me Think About It” Actually Means

That phrase has wasted more hours of good people's lives than almost anything I can name.

When someone says let me think about it and then disappears, that was almost never a real maybe. That was a soft no from a person who was never your buyer to begin with. They were being kind. They did not want to hurt your feelings. So they gave you the softest version of no they could find and then quietly exited the conversation.

And you spent a week refreshing your messages waiting for an update that was never coming.

The problem was not your follow up. The problem was not your pitch. The problem was not the timing or the product or the compensation plan. The problem was who you were following up with. You were trying to drag the wrong person across the finish line and they had no interest in crossing.

Once I really understood this, something shifted. Because I stopped taking the soft no personally. I stopped wondering what I said wrong. I stopped replaying conversations trying to find the moment things went sideways. And I started asking a completely different question.

Not how do I get this person to say yes. But am I even talking to the right person in the first place.

Your Job Is Not to Convince Anyone

I want to say this clearly because it changed everything for me.

Your job is not to convince anybody of anything.

The second you find yourself trying to talk someone into wanting what you have, you have already lost. Not because you said the wrong thing. Because you are now doing emotional labor for a person who never asked for it. And you cannot convince your way into a yes with someone who was not already looking for what you offer.

The most successful people I know, and I am talking about people doing real serious numbers in their business, millions and multi-millions a year, they are not better at convincing people. They are simply better at discerning. They got crystal clear on exactly who they were for and then they stopped spending a single ounce of energy on everyone else.

That feels backwards when you first hear it. Because we are taught in this industry that more is more. More people, more messages, more outreach. Just go talk to five more people. But when you talk to everybody you connect with nobody.

The magic is not in casting the widest net. The magic is in getting so specific that the right person feels like you reached into their chest and read their mind. That is when people lean in. That is when they reply saying oh my gosh this is exactly me. You cannot create that feeling by shouting into the masses. You can only create it by speaking directly to one real person with one real problem that you can actually solve.

How to Stop the Bleeding: Three Things to Do Instead

First: Get painfully clear on who your perfect person is.

Not their age and their zip code. Not a vague demographic like women who want to earn money online. I mean their problem. What keeps them up at three in the morning? What are they secretly embarrassed about? What have they already tried that did not work? What do they say to themselves late at night when they are wondering if this is ever going to change for them?

When you know that, your words change completely. The content you create stops being generic and starts being specific. And specific content does something that generic content never can. It makes the right person feel like you are speaking directly to them. Like somehow you knew exactly what they were going through before they ever said a word to you. That is when people raise their hand on their own. Not because you chased them but because you named something true that nobody else was saying.

Second: Qualify instead of chase.

Ask questions early. Let people tell you whether they are actually a fit instead of you assuming everybody is and then wearing yourself out trying to prove it. A simple curious question early in a conversation tells you so much about whether this person is actually looking for what you have or whether they are just being friendly.

You are not screening people out because you think you are too good for them. You are screening people in because your time and energy matter and the right person deserves your full focus. Qualifying is an act of respect, for them and for yourself.

Third: Give yourself full permission to let the wrong people go.

This one protects your heart and your energy more than almost anything else on this list.

When somebody is clearly not your person, that is not rejection. That is information. And it is a gift. Because it frees you up to go find the person who has been quietly waiting for exactly what you offer. The person who is ready. The person who lights up when they hear what you do. The person who feels like a relief when they show up instead of a project.

You do not owe everybody your energy. You owe your best to the people who are actually meant to receive it.

What Changes When You Get This Right

I want to talk for a minute about what this does for your confidence. Because this is the piece most people do not expect.

When you stop chasing and you stop operating from desperation, and desperation is the absolute worst energy you can bring to any conversation by the way, something shifts in how you show up. You stop performing. You stop trying to be whatever you think the other person needs you to be. And you start showing up as yourself, which is actually the most magnetic thing you can do.

The day I stopped trying to be for everyone and started being unapologetically for my perfect person, my whole business changed. The right people started finding me. The conversations got easier. The yeses came faster because I was no longer wrestling no into maybe. I was simply talking to people who already wanted what I had.

And that is so much more sustainable for a real human with a real life.

Because chasing burns you out. You can only do that for so long before you start to resent the whole thing. You start to dread your phone. You start to feel like every conversation is a negotiation you might lose. You start to wonder if there is something fundamentally wrong with you because nothing seems to convert.

There is nothing wrong with you.

The people who were meant for you are not the ones you had to drag across the finish line. They are the ones who showed up and felt like relief.

And when you stop exhausting yourself on everyone else, you finally have the space, the energy, and the clarity to find them.
